It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Alan J. Tyma, a founding member of the Valley Community Foundation (VCF), a lifelong advocate for the Valley, and a steadfast leader who dedicated his life to strengthening our community. Alan passed away on Sunday, February 16, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

VCF extends our deepest condolences to his wife, Mary Ann, his children, Christiana and Brendan, and his cherished grandchildren.

More than 20 years ago, while serving as a member of the Board of Directors at The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven (TCF), Alan was instrumental in pushing for the creation of VCF. Many of our founding members credit his tenacious vision and unwavering commitment as the driving force behind VCF’s establishment.

Alan was a proud Derby native and spent his career championing causes that uplifted the Valley region. He co-founded the law firm Ryan & Tyma in Shelton, providing counsel to many local nonprofits and serving as Corporation Counsel for Derby and Assistant Corporation Counsel for Shelton.

He also held leadership roles on numerous boards, including Griffin Hospital, the Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce, the Valley Regional Water Authority, Massaro Community Farm, and of course TCF and VCF. His dedication earned him the Chamber’s Gold and Platinum Seal Awards, honoring his exceptional service to the community.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish to honor his memory may contribute to the John Tyma Fund at VCF (linked at the button below), and to other organizations close to his heart, including Project Purple and Massaro Community Farm.
