Valley Community Foundation Donates $20,000 to Flood Relief Fund

In response to the devastating floods that swept through the region on August 18, claiming two lives and causing widespread damage, the Valley Community Foundation (VCF) announced today a donation of $20,000 to the Valley Flood Relief Fund.

Derby, CT —  In response to the devastating floods that swept through the region on August 18, claiming two lives and causing widespread damage, the Valley Community Foundation (VCF) announced today a donation of $20,000 to the Valley Flood Relief Fund.

The fund was established by TEAM, Inc. — a local and trusted nonprofit and community action agency — to provide immediate assistance to residents throughout the flooded region, especially those affected in Ansonia, Derby, Oxford, Shelton, and Seymour. On Friday, VCF’s Executive Committee met in a special session to approve the allocation of money from its Reserve Fund to the flood fund so it can be used as soon as possible to help Valley residents.

“While the entire Valley community is grappling with the aftermath of this unprecedented storm, it’s heartening to see organizations like TEAM stepping up to lead the relief efforts,” said Sharon Closius, VCF’s President and CEO. “We at VCF are committed to supporting these efforts and helping our neighbors rebuild their lives.”

In addition to the $20,000, VCF fundholders have already donated directly. She said soon after the special fund was created on Monday, she and VCF staff received calls from fundholders wanting to contribute to the flood relief fund.

The flood happened after more than 15 inches of rain fell in just a few hours over several Valley towns. It caused roads to be washed away, leaving homes and businesses devastated by raging flood waters. The most heartbreaking loss was the tragic deaths of two women in Oxford — Ethelyn Joiner and Audrey Rostkowski — both swept away by floodwaters.

The severity of the storm took local officials and residents by surprise, as it was not forecasted. Many families and business owners are now left facing the challenge of repairing their properties, replacing lost possessions, and securing temporary housing.

“TEAM has a long-standing history of helping the most vulnerable in our region, and their swift action in setting up this fund reflects their deep commitment to the Valley’s well-being,” said Closius. “David Morgan and his group have been tireless in ensuring that resources are distributed efficiently and equitably to those most affected by this disaster. Their leadership has been exemplary, and we are proud to support their work.”

On Friday, VCF staff, Board of Directors, Board Advisory Council and Fundholders, also wanted to acknowledge the extraordinary acts of kindness and bravery shown by volunteers, first responders, and residents in the wake of the flood. From firefighters risking their lives to save others to neighbors helping each other clean up the wreckage, the spirit of the Valley has shone brightly amid the darkness of this disaster.

“We have seen the very best of our community over the past several days,” Closius said. “The outpouring of support and the willingness of people to come together in the face of adversity is what makes the Valley so special. We are deeply grateful to all the volunteers who have been working tirelessly to provide comfort, relief, and assistance to those impacted.”

As the Valley continues to recover, VCF remains dedicated to supporting its residents and working closely with local organizations like TEAM to ensure that everyone in the community has the resources they need to rebuild and move forward.
