More than 60,000 jobs are currently unfilled in our state, according to the Department of Labor, yet many potential workers remain on the sidelines.
The Convening takes an in-depth look at how to bridge this gap through an online discussion of the newly released Labor Market Study of Greater New Haven and the Valley. A panel of local employers digs into the report’s key findings and recommendations for how to match local residents with quality middle-skill jobs in economic growth sectors.

What We Heard
- Labor shortages are occurring in virtually every business.
- The best way for the local economy to grow is through growing the local talent pool.
- Employers need to be engaged with job-training programs so the curriculums are aligned with industry needs.
- Many quality jobs do not need a college education but require skills training.
- Employers and public school programs need to be aligned to create opportunities for students who are not going to college.
- Young people need exposure to biotech and other industries with middle and high skill jobs in order to be aware of their opportunities.
- Increased workforce participation for people living in poverty requires individualized wrap-around services such as childcare and transportation support.

About the study: A collaboration by The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, Valley Community Foundation, the Regional Labor Market Analysis Advisory Committee and Blakely Consulting, the Labor Market Study of Greater New Haven and The Valley examines pathways to employment for residents who have been historically underserved by the workforce system and offers solutions to the problem of unfilled middle-skill jobs in our region. Middle-skill jobs are those that pay a living wage, offer pathways to careers and require more education and training than high school but less than a four-year college degree.
